Grandchildren and Trees

By Andrew and Marcella Nixt

My husband is a farmer so if or when we’d lose a tree because of bad weather he always replaced it.

In 1989, when our first grandchild was born we planted a Colorado blue spruce. The next year our second grandchild was born and this time we planted a Black Hills spruce. For the next six years we continued to plant a tree for each grandchild that was born.

I also painted a rock with their name and the year they were born and placed it beside their tree. As the children and trees grow we took pictures of them beside their tree. It has been fun to see the growth of both.

When my parents died we planted a Douglas fir and a Linden tree in their memory. When my husband’s parents died we dug up a very small oak tree from their farm and brought it to ours and planted it. I also painted a rock with their names and year and placed it beside their tree and did this for my parents too.
