Trees for Kids/Trees for Teens

SOURCE: Iowa Department of Natural Resources Forestry Bureau in partnership with Alliant Energy, MidAmerican Energy, Black Hills Energy, Iowa Bankers Association, Trees Forever, Iowa Tree Farm Committee, and the Iowa Woodland Owners Association

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM
To educate students about the value of trees and to encourage tree planting projects at schools and other public areas around the state.

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS
Local/state governments (school districts, cities, counties), and service organizations with 501(c)3 status are eligible. Organizations lacking 501(c)3 status can attain eligibility by involving local governments in the holding of funds. Program does not require but encourages matching funds. An educational component must be included to be eligible.

ELIGIBLE PROJECTS
Some examples of projects that are funded include:
  • Planting and caring for a windbreak on the north and west side of a new school
  • Planting shade trees by a playground
  • Planting trees at a city, county, or state park or campground
  • Planting trees on any public property
GRANT AMOUNT: Competitive grants are awarded between $1,000.00 and $5,000.00 each spring and fall. Community groups are encouraged, but not required, to find matching funds or in-kind donations within their community.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: September 10 for fall planting and March 15 for spring planting applications

ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION: September and March
