Are you looking for funds to beautify an entranceway, roadside, or trail? Iowa’s Living Roadways Projects is a resource for small communities (under 10,000 population) and rural county projects that use native grasses, wildflowers, and primarily native trees and shrubs to enhance our transportation corridors. Since 1996, more than $2,988,690 has been awarded to over 300 Iowa counties and communities.
The purpose of the Iowa’s Living Roadways ProjectsTM Program is to assist communities and counties in implementing transportation enhancement projects. Communities that have participated in Community Visioning receive first priority for this funding, but Visioning is not a prerequisite to apply. Examples of the types of projects funded are:
• community entryway beautification
• landscaping of recreational trails
• highway roadside plantings
• roadside rest areas
• prairie and savanna establishment
• butterfly gardens
• outdoor classrooms
Who is eligible to participate?
Iowa communities with a population of 10,000 or less. Participation in Visioning prior to applying to this program is helpful, although not required.
The goals of this program include:
• helping smaller communities compete for funds to enhance their transportation corridors for residents and travelers alike
• beautification of communities through native plants that are lower maintenance than many other plantings.
What assistance or services are provided through this program?
Funding of up to $20,000 for native plants for transportation enhancement projects. A field coordinator can help the community by reviewing their draft application, and providing assistance once funding has been granted.
What is the application deadline?
December 1, 2010. Applicants often plan for a spring planting immediately following the application deadline. They are advised to have alternate plans for a fall planting or to wait until the following spring to allow time for necessary clearances and contracting.
