Prairie
The native grasses and wildflowers (forbs) of the Midwest are perfectly adapted for use throughout our communities, yards, farms and roadsides. In addition to being beautiful and indigenous to the landscape, prairie plants provide many functional benefits to the environment when used. Their deep, fibrous root systems hold soil in place while crowding out weed species. In fact, prairie plants are preferred for use in rain gardens due to their roots’ ability to soak up water.
Trees Forever offers several opportunities to learn about native plants through workshops that are held throughout Iowa each year.
