Streambank Stabilization

Addressing and solving water quality problems along our streams and rivers are complex in nature.  Doing all that we can to filter nutrient, sediment and chemical runoff out of our surface waters before they reach the stream is not enough if the problems of sedimentation from the banks of our streams and rivers is not addressed.  In order prevent this type of sedimentation from occurring on the banks of the streams and rivers must be held in place by the roots of vegetation or hard armor (like rip rap).  Many different techniques from planting willow stems into the banks, anchoring brush along banks to the use of heavy equipment to reshape the banks before reestablishing vegetation on it have proven to work.

Consult with a local Trees Forever Field Coordinator about our Working Watersheds: Buffers and BeyondTM program which could provide some technical assistance and cost-share to landowners wanting to stabilize their stream banks.
