Corky Solutions: Repurposing Culture to Create Sustainability

Wednesday, July 24th, 2019
Downtown Cedar Rapids Library, Whipple Auditorium
Reception 5:00 p.m.
Presentation 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Join Trees Forever, The City of Cedar Rapids and The Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio for an evening of culture, art and sustainability. This free event features Paula and Antonio Pinto. They are two fearless artists from Portugal who are pushing the boundaries of art in order to face real world problems. They will be speaking about their work and how they confront social, economic, and ecological issues by partnering with locals and embracing undervalued cultures. Through art, the couple confronts the impact of globalization on marginalized communities. Discover how items Americans take for granted, such as a wine cork, can have an impact on farmers in Portugal who harvest the cork trees and small communities throughout the world.

Their collaborative design projects include urban furniture made from recycled wood shipping palettes and a cork drink container (designed) to be sold online. Both projects are intended to create an awareness of threatened resources and occupations. The Pintos’ socially engaged practice seeks a balance between social, cultural, environmental, and economic areas of society to create a sustainable system.

There will be a reception at 5:00 p.m. on the Library Roof Garden before the presentation starts at 5:30 p.m.
