~Jeff Speck, urban planner, architect and author
Introduction by Frank Cownie, Mayor, City of Des Moines
"Green" design means different things to different people. Environmentalists focus on preserving the natural landscape. Architects focus on creating healthy buildings that conserve energy. Engineers focus on limiting stormwater impacts. Developers focus on market appetites for "sustainable" living. But they threaten to obscure a larger picture in which it is the way we organize our communities -- not just what they are made of, or how they sit on the land -- that determines their true environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Jeff Speck, co-Author of Suburban Nation and the Smart Growth Manual will share his understanding of what it really means to be green in the context of building and rebuilding mid-size cities like Cedar Rapids.
