Cedar Rapids, Iowa – (April 15, 2009) – The City of Cedar Rapids and Trees Forever are partnering to find the biggest trees in Cedar Rapids.  The Cedar Rapids “Champion Tree” Contest is designed to locate and identify the largest trees in Cedar Rapids. The purpose is to give special recognition to big trees, focus our attention on the many benefits of trees,  and to have a little fun and competition along the way.

Everyone is invited to join in the search for Cedar Rapids' biggest trees. The winning tree owners and the person who submitted the nomination will each receive a certificate of recognition and all bragging rights associated with finding or owning an official "Champion Tree" of Cedar Rapids.

“After all the loss and damage we suffered during last year’s flooding, we realized that it was also  important to recognize the many natural resources that we have here in Cedar Rapids,” notes Daniel Gibbins, Cedar Rapids City Arborist.  “Trees provide so many benefits to our community.  They are worthy of some special recognition!”

If you wish to nominate a tree, complete the survey form here.  The deadline for nominations is May 29, 2009.

After the nomination deadline, the City Arborist will verify the finalists.  He will also check with the National Big Tree Registry, sponsored by the American Forestry Association, to determine if the tree may also qualify to be a national champion. Remember, if you wish to examine or measure a tree on private land, always get permission from the owner first.

The Champion Tree winners will be announced at a special event on June 19, 2009.  Join City Arborist Daniel Gibbins and the staff of Trees Forever at Ushers Ferry Historic Village from 7-8:30 pm for the announcement of the winners, a special “Liberty Tree” presentation, and a Champion Tree tour!  For more information please log on to www.treesforever.org, or call Ashley Green at (319)373-0650 x 25.
