Volunteers Needed to Help Replant Pinicon Ridge Campground
Marion, Iowa - (September 18, 2009) - Trees Forever and the Linn County Conservation Board are joining forces to replant dozens of trees in the Pinicon Ridge Park campground near Central City. The new trees are needed to replace over 100 trees that were lost or damaged from a tornado that ripped through the park this past April. The September 26th planting event also coincides with National Public Lands Day.
The tree planting project will take place at the B-Loop of Pinicon Ridge Park’s Flying Squirrel Campground. Volunteers are needed from 9:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, September 26 to help plant and mulch the new trees. Volunteers should dress for outdoor work and bring their own gloves. Open-toed shoes are not recommended. Volunteers may also want to bring their own shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows.
“We are very excited to be able to help replant the trees at Pinicon Ridge,” notes Shannon Ramsay, Trees Forever’s Founding President. “Shade trees in a campground are practically a necessity! Campers will be able to enjoy the cool shade and freshened air from these new trees for many years to come.”
The Linn County Conservation Board and Trees Forever are coordinating the September 26 volunteer planting event. Some of the trees for the campground replanting project are being purchased using a grant from the Alliant Energy Branching Out program. Additional oak trees were donated by Ia-Wis-Il Nursery in Cascade, Iowa, through the Trees Forever Recover, Replant & Restore program. Major funding for the Recover Replant & Restore program comes from Van Meter Industrial, Bank of the West, Rockwell Collins, and others.
2009 marks the 16th year that National Public Lands Day (NPLD) has brought together thousands of volunteers across the nation to improve and restore public lands and facilities. It is the largest, single-day volunteer event benefiting public lands each year. Trees Forever is sponsoring another NPLD planting event at the Illinois Army National Guard’s Sparta Training Facility on September 26.
Volunteers interested in helping with the tree replanting project at Pinicon Ridge can show up any time during the morning event. For more information, please call Trees Forever at 319-373-0650, extension #25.
