Special Monument Dedication and Tree Planting Ceremony
Trees Forever will recognize their 20-year tree-planting partnership with Waverly Light & Power at a special ceremony on September 6 at 6:00 p.m. along Adams Parkway, near the Rail trail. A stone marker will be dedicated to recognize this special anniversary, and an oak tree will be planted in honor of the two-decade-long partnership.
Waverly Light & Power (WL&P) was the first municipal utility in Iowa to partner with Trees Forever to plant more trees and improve the community. This was just two years after Trees Forever was founded. WL&P leaders recognized the importance and value of planting trees for the energy savings and many other benefits that they provide to property owners and the community at large.
Trees Forever has been greening and improving Iowa and Midwestern communities through tree planting and water quality initiatives for the past 22 years. WL&P continued to show its groundbreaking concern for the environment in 1991, when the utility made a five-year commitment of money and support to Trees Forever to help preserve and restore Iowa's forests.
Working together, Waverly Light & Power and Trees Forever have supported Waverly Trees Forever with their energy conservation and community betterment projects for the past two decades. From 1991 through 2010, the partnership has resulted in:
• 7,731 Trees Planted in the Community
• 2,592 Volunteers & Youth Involved
• 14,012 Volunteer Hours Contributed
By supporting the Waverly Trees Forever Program, Waverly Light and Power continues to invest in its community through energy efficiency efforts that build community, increase landscape value, and improve the environment.
By planting the right trees in the right places, homeowners and the City can enjoy maximum benefits from those trees for years to come. Trees reduce energy costs, enhance property values, reduce storm water runoff, and remove pollutants and carbon dioxide from the air.
Waverly Trees Forever Program Goals:
- Energy Efficiency
- Community Investment
- Improving the Environment
- Volunteerism and Employee Involvement
Members of the public are invited to attend this special tree-planting ceremony. Refreshments will be provided.
