Remove Invasives

& Feed the Zoo Animals

Join Trees Forever, City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Blank Park Zoo and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation for UPCYCLE Stewards, an exciting classroom and hands-on training workshop focused on identifying and removing invasive plants. Staff from Blank Park Zoo will talk about how the plants are "upcycled" into food and fun for the zoo animals. There will be a hands-on component to the class and future volunteer opportunities will be offered to attendees. Your help is needed to remove these backyard and forest invaders!

Learn about:

  • Why invasive species are a problem
  • Specific invasive species to look for
  • Removal techniques and control methods
  • Native species alternatives

There is a $10 fee for this event, which includes dinner and educational materials.

Note: We will not visit the zoo during the May 18th class. Participants will get a chance to visit the zoo and feed the animals at future invasive species removal days.
