Remove Invasives

& Feed the Zoo Animals

Join Trees Forever, City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Blank Park Zoo and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation for the UPCYCLE Stewards Workshop on May 18. UPCYCLE Stewards is an exciting classroom and hands-on training workshop focused on identifying and removing invasive plants. Staff from Blank Park Zoo will talk about how the plants are "upcycled" into food and fun for the zoo animals.

There will be a hands-on component to the class, and future volunteer opportunities will be offered to attendees on June 15, July 20, and August 17 at Gray’s Lake. Your help is needed to remove these backyard and forest invaders!

NEW THIS YEAR! After the volunteer events in June, July, and August, we’ll all head over to Confluence Brewing Company for one beer at no charge to volunteers. Thanks Confluence for your generous support!

At the workshop, learn about:
  • Why invasive species are a problem.
  • Specific invasive species hurting our woodlands.
  • Removal techniques and control methods.
  • Native species alternatives.

There is a $10 fee for this event, which includes dinner and educational materials.

Note: We will not visit the zoo during the May 18th class. If UPCYCLE Steward volunteers participant in all three volunteer events (June 15, July 20, and August 17) they will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a family four pack entrance to the zoo along with a “feed bundle” which includes food to feed the parakeets, ostriches, giraffes, kid's kingdom animals and fish!
