Growing Futures

Trees Forever’s Growing Futures teen employment program takes a unique approach to caring for our community’s trees. Through Growing Futures, teams of high schoolers are employed to help plant and care for our tree canopy while also learning about the world around them and the potential within themselves.

Through Growing Futures, Trees Forever is building and caring for the tree canopies in the Cedar Rapids and Des Moines metro regions. With adult supervision and training, these teenagers learn new skills that will position them to be future leaders in the community.

Get involved with Growing Futures!

Throughout the spring, summer and fall, Growing Future Teammates will:

Plant, water, mulch, stake, and prune trees
Explore green career paths
Build on-the-job experience and skills
Learn about tree identification
Participate in financial literacy and resume building professional development
Job shadow and learn from guest presenters
Grow their community’s urban forest!

Growing Futures teammates must be between 14 and 18 years old and able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds of water/soil/mulch. Employees must be able to keep consistent attendance and work well in small groups and teams. Spring Growing Futures sessions run Saturdays, mid-April to the first week of June. Summer Growing Futures sessions run mid-June to the first week of August, Mondays through Thursdays. Fall Growing Futures sessions run Saturdays, mid-September to the first week of November.
