The 11th Annual Upper Midwest Hazelnut Growers Conference March 6th and 7th is back in Iowa and better than ever. Friday, March 6th is a processing open house, where anyone with equipment to showcase can set up and demonstrate crackers, sizers and more. Come learn how to husk, size, crack, sort, and process your nuts into kernels and other value added products. Hazelnuts 101 will also be taught for new or aspiring growers; get the inside scoop on how to grow hazelnuts in the Midwest and gather first-hand accounts from those that have been doing it for more than a decade. We will cap things off with a show-and-tell session at a local brewery, so if you have something to share contact Jeff Jensen to get on the list.
Presentations on Saturday, March 7th will update attendees on a variety of topics including insect and pest concerns, genetics and cultivar options, new grower networks, harvesting and processing equipment, feeding hazelnuts to pigs, plant breeding, economics, and more. Trees Forever Program Manager Jeff Jensen will be facilitating the Creating a Buzz: Pollinator Plus Training on Saturday from 11:00 to noon and those that attend will receive a Pollinator Plus Toolkit. These annual conferences are a great way to learn more about hazelnuts as an emerging agroforestry crop, as well as network with other growers from throughout the Midwest.
